My Favorite Things is a monthly blog linkup to share the things you love, co-hosted with the lovely Eirene! As always, it’s open for one week starting on the first Tuesday. :D

Before I start, I’d just like to say that one of the things I love about hosting this linkup is discovering some seriously awesome stuff! I would’ve never known about them if it weren’t for all the monthly submissions, so thank you so much to those who’ve been participating! <3 For those who are here for the first time, I hope you'd join us too.

Momentum is a beautiful tab page add-on for Chrome. Every time you open up a new tab, you’re greeted with a lovely scenic photograph with quick access to the time, weather, a focus line (not shown above), links list on the top left, and a to-do list on the bottom right. You can tell I love to-do lists. XD

Fresh Off the Boat

I love Fresh Off the Boat because I can relate so much. My grandma had the success perm. My mom has that raging paranoia (“Watch Law & Order!!!” she’d tell me). And I love the 90s setting! The internet dial-up slayed me, remember those? XD You know you’re getting old when there are kids romanticizing the 90s. It was the time of Hanson, All That, Kenan & Kel, and the Spice Girls. IT WAS AMAZING.

I do have mixed feelings about some of the jokes on the show, but overall they’ve taken care not to make being Asian the punchline, which I appreciate. It’s really just your regular family comedy, but it represents the Asian-American community, the second-largest minority group in the US but one of the most underrepresented in the media. There hasn’t been a show on network TV starring an Asian-American family since 1994 (All-American Girl). That’s a significant point to keep in mind with this show. I really hope it succeeds so it can open more doors for Asian actors.

Plus, Constance Wu is awesome! If anything, watch the show for her. <3 That's it for my faves this month. What are your favorites? Follow the rules below and tell us! :D

Thank you for being a part of My Favorite Things! The next date will be on April 7. See you next time!

  1. Momentum looks awesome, but I am unable to install it on my Chrome? Not nice, Chrome . . . :( I’ll try again later, but it does look like a neat app!

And I never heard of that show, and I’ll most likely not watch it (I don’t really do TV shows), but I think it’s great that there is an Asian-American show :D And yes for the 1990s! I miss that decade! Reading about your blurb is making me miss those days . . . I can definitely say the music were better then!

Thank you and thank you to Eirene for hosting this link up! I agree that this has been introducing me to so many great things!

    1. I faved your tweet last night; I’m glad you got to install it! :D It is beautiful, isn’t it?

Thinking about the 90s got me thinking about the 2000s too with Lizzie McGuire! XD I miss that show so much.

  2. I should really watch that show. I’ve heard it’s really good, and it apparently does a good job of calling out microaggressions. I’m assuming so, at least, since I have literally had white people telling me the show is racist. Like, okay, but it was created by a Chinese guy who has experienced stuff like that, so… :P

    1. The show occasionally takes jabs at white people, but they’re meant to point out ignorance (all look same, communism jokes, Asian fetish, etc). I can see how they would be uncomfortable, but these are things Asian-Americans experience on the regular, and everyone should be aware of that.

  3. I love Fresh Off The Boat! It made me feel so nostalgic and I could relate so much. Every episode is so funny to me! I really like that it’s getting pretty good feedback, too, even from people who might not necessarily relate. I like that it’s sharing the Asian American experience without a filter.

    1. Yeah, I really love it for that! I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect show because obviously it won’t represent every Asian’s experiences. But that speaks more of the lack of media representation than anything else. One show can’t possible cover every person. Hopefully, as more shows star minorities, we can have more accurate portrayals.

  4. I went ahead and installed Momentum just now. First impression is that it’s gorgeous! Love the Links panel too.

I hadn’t thought about it before, but you’re right: there are very few (practically none?) shows about Asian families. If it ever makes its way over here I might check it out. :)

    1. Yeah, the links and to-do lists are my favorites!

I hope you enjoy the show if you do get to see it! A lot of people I’ve talked to say they can relate a lot to it, so I’m glad the show is giving them a voice on network TV. :D

    1. You should, it’s a lot of fun! XD The dad is Randall Park; he was also in The Interview. That was unfortunate, but whatever pays the bills, I suppose.

  5. Aah, Momentum is so pretty! I’m going to look into that :)

I need to watch Fresh of the Boat. I keep seeing GIF sets of it, and it looks so funny. Plus, I feel like I could relate to it a lot too. It makes me happy that there is a show focused on an Asian American family!

    1. Yay! I’m glad you got to join. <3

I really love Momentum for the pretty to-do list. The problem is now I have lists across three apps and I lose track lol.

  7. Fresh of the Boat looks interesting! I’ve been seeing gif’s from that show all over Tumblr. And now that you’ve written here that it’s so 90’s, I definitely have to watch it!! ♥

  8. Momentum sounds like such a cool and inspiring feature to have added to your browser. I stopped using Chrome a while ago, but I will have to see if FireFox has something similar. :D

That is really cool that you enjoy the show so much! :D It’s great when you can get a show you really enjoy.

  10. I normally don’t watch sitcoms, but I hear good things about Fresh Off The Boat, but regardless, I must check it out, plus, the 90’s were amazing, musically wise, just like the 80’s.

Also, SPICE GIRLS are life ^^
